Sara

R.E.A.D. to Sara

In the month of Feburary, in 2010, Our

school suffered a tragic loss. Sara, a certified

R.E.A.D. dog was lost to us and she never

returned. She will be missed, and for most of

us at W.E.S. her memory can be found only

a book away. Gone but not forgotten!

This is a volunteer program offered since 2005 by WES employee, Anne Malver and her dog Sara. Once a week throughout the school year, teacher-selected children look forward to reading to Sara in a comfortable, relaxed setting. If you were to observe a session you would see a sweet-tempered black and tan German shepherd lying on a comforter with big fluffy pillows. Ms. Anne would be sitting nearby on the floor, and there would be one very happy child reading aloud while petting Sara. The books used for this program are highly motivating in nature, and each reader gets to choose which story they will read to Sara. Some of the favorites are, "Good Boy, Fergus", "Big Dog, Little Dog", and "Dogzilla"

Anne and Sara are certified by: Delta Society (Bellevue, WA) as a “Pet Partner Therapy Team”, and by Intermountain Therapy Animals (Salt Lake City, Utah) as a R.E.A.D. team (Reading Education Assistance Dogs)
